Wow, almost 3 months without a blog entry - sorry... life has been tough - 2016 was tough... And in the mess, I lost track of so much of myself, my goals, me. The Dirty Truth about Artifical Sweeteners

I can't tell you how many times I walk down the aisles of the grocery store and cringe when I see all the sugar free, calorie free "foods"... The problem is, for years we have been told to avoid sugar - but eliminating sugar is impossible... Tah-dah artificial sweeteners seem like the perfect solution, right? Not so fast my friends... These zero-calorie chemicals, which are often added to foods and beverages marketed as weight-loss friendly, are a hot topic. They're use is highly controversial, and they're blamed for just about everything from headaches, to weight gain, to cancer.

Over the years, more artificial sweeteners—along with more controversy—have made their way to the market in an effort to satisfy the human need for sweet-tasting foods while minimizing calorie consumption. There are six FDA-approved artificial sweeteners currently on the market: acesulfame potassium (acesulfame K), aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, neotame, and advantame.

I could go on and on about the studies linking artificial sweeteners to cancer and other diseases - these studies, like most are controversial. But for the purpose of what I do, I want to talk to you about its effects on your waistline.

Our bodies are so used to associating sweet taste with calories - so what happens when we switch it up and sweet taste means zero calories? Animal models certainly indicate that artificial sweeteners can impair the innate ability to regulate caloric intake. Rats who are fed with artificial sweeteners consistently gain more weight than rats who are fed with glucose. Additionally, the rats don’t tend to lose the excess weight, even after their diets are switched back to glucose.

Research over the last 30 years have shown that artificial sweeteners stimulate appetite, increase cravings for carbs, and produce a variety of metabolic dysfunctions that promote fat storage and weight gain.

I am a firm believer that we need to get as close to nature as possible when it comes to the food we consume. I believe artificial sweeteners are chemicals that disrupt the micro-gut, and increases cravings. And I am a believer that artificial sweeteners are just as addictive as sugar. So how do we start breaking this cycle? I have found success in using Shakeology daily. A low calorie, no artificial sweetener that satisfies my cravings while increasing my energy.

Shakeology Pie

It's picnic time! And I hate going anywhere empty handed! This is a great protein packed dessert to keep you on point with your goals, while getting you a little chocolate fix! I love pudding pies, but now I can have a guilt free and superfood version!

What you need:

  • 1 whole wheat graham cracker pie crust
  • 1 1/2 cups low fat vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 2 scoops chocolate Shakeology
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter 
  • 1/2 cup vanilla unsweetened almond milk

What you need to do:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl (well not the crust, silly!).  Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are blended well.
  2. Put the mixture into the pie crust and spread evenly.
  3. Freeze for 2-3 hours before serving.  
Just because it is healthy, doesn't mean you can eat the whole pie - remember 1 serving size is 1/8 of pie. Keep refrigerated and as always ENJOY!

Salted Caramel Frap

No secrets - I am not a coffee person, not even a little bit... so what did I do? Outsource! Yep, I pretty much gave samples away, in return for my challengers favorite Café Latte recipes! Come on, you know you want that job? (and seriously, if you do - let me know! I have more samples and I need more recipes!) So this one was an overwhelming favorite! And I can see why :) Enjoy! Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Shakeology

My favorite cookie though, hmm toss up between the sugar cookie and a good ol' oatmeal cookie - so why not take one of my favorite cookies and turn it into a shake :)

What you need:

  • 1 Scoop of Vanilla Shakeology
  • 1/4 c of rolled oats uncooked
  • 1 tsp of vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 8 ice cubes
And simply - blend and top with a small handful of raisins!

Pumpkin Cheesecake Shakeology

I feel like I do this every Christmas season... I crave just one last piece of pumpkin pie - and this year I was introduced to Pumpkin Cheesecake. I tried my hardest to obey my two bite rule, but I couldn't... and so my newest shakeology recipe was born - obviously not exactly like pumpkin cheesecake, but it did help kick the craving!

In a mixer add (in this order):
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 10 ice cubes
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup vanilla greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 tsp sugar free/fat free cheesecake pudding powder
  • 1 scoop of vanilla Shakeology
Blend and top with cinnamon!

I'm in love - seriously! I drink my Shakeology for lunch, which just so happens to be my 'tired time' - I wake up with energy, I drag mid day and I usually have a decent amount of night time energy... The natural caffeine gave me an immediate boost without feeling jittery (which I was afraid of because I do not drink coffee or other caffeine products) and I felt more energized than usual as the afternoon and evening went on.

I did not notice any texture or taste changes to my Shakeology (I do blend with ice)

The only downfall I see, is that I can't share this with my girls - because lets face it, who in their right mind would give their very active kids something that would increase their energy? ;)

Shakeology Mug Cake

Cause lets face it - sometimes you just need cake!

What you need:

  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp of Stevia (optional)
  • 1 scoop of Chocolate Shakeology
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 egg
  • optional mix in: 1 tsp peanut butter or cocoa powder
  • 2 or 3 tbsp vanilla unsweetened almond milk

What you need to do:

  1. In a mug mix Shakeology, baking powder, salt, and sweetener.
  2. Mix in an egg and 2-3 tbsp of milk
  3. Mix until dry ingredients are wet
  4. If you'd like to add peanut butter, put one dollop in the center and push it down a bit
  5. Microwave for 90 seconds
  6. When it is done the edges will pull from the sides
  7. ENJOY!

Whey Protein

Whey is a dietary supplement and food ingredient created by separating components from milk. Whey is a by-product of the cheese-making process.  Whey isolates contain the higher percentage of pure protein and can be pure enough to be virtually lactose free, carbohydrate free, fat free, and cholesterol free.

True Story - I am at my mom's house and my mom gives Aubrey chocolate milk (milk with chocolate syrup) and Aubrey says, "this doesn't taste like healthy chocolate milk!"

When my mom asked what "healthy chocolate milk" was - I told her that Aubrey drinks Shakeology daily with me!

 My mom said, "Oh, I am surprised you let her drink that - Ryan (my brother) said it has ingredients in it that he couldn't pronounce"

"Mom, not many people can pronounce 'Obeldobel' (my maiden name) but that doesn't mean it is bad!" I replied

This had me thinking - maybe other people think the same thing! And maybe people don't know what makes Shakeology so fabulous! And maybe people think this is comparable to a protein shake sitting on the counter at the store!

More than inches lost...

Starting this journey, I had a lot of doubts - I had tried to drop these pounds a million times on my own... I've done Weight Watchers, fad diets, joined a gym and odd ball nasty cleanses - part of me wondered if this would be any different... I had a big goal, and I was trying to beat the odds against me - a busy mom, small budget, not a lot of time and a thyroid condition that is notorious for causing unwanted weight gain...

In that moment, I distinctly remember looking at myself in the mirror - face to face - and promising that today was the day... A little (probably way to honest) backstory, when I found out I was pregnant with Aubrey, I wanted so badly for her to be a boy - I could never imagine myself as a mom of girls... I had always struggled with poor body image, poor self confidence and self esteem and I never wanted to "pass that down" to my daughter - finding out she was a girl was  challenging because I didn't think I would be good enough for her - But through this experience, I realized these girls came into my life to save it... Every time I wanted to give up, give in, skip a day - I looked at them and kept pushing harder. They make me want to be a better person, they are that driving force, the heart beat...

I started in a challenge group which is closed group on Facebook, where my coach helped myself and others like me on our journey - I learned about clean eating, fitness tips, how much water I should drink, how to order off a menu, basically how to make this a lifestyle change and not just a quick fix... I was negative at first, my stomach hit off my thighs as I workout out, my body craved sugar and carbs, I was out of breath - but I promised myself I would do this, 60 days fully committed... as time went on the workouts are easier, my energy levels improved, the cravings disappeared and I was getting real results.... A lot of times people ask me what I owe my success to - and there are a lot of things - dedication, support of the challenge groups, coaching, my girls... but I would have to say it is Shakeology - Shakeology gave me the energy, cut my cravings, it was a healthy meal that I didn't have to think about, it helped with mood stability and depression, and for once in 10 years my thyroid levels were more stable than ever... In the middle of the day when Aubrey wanted lunch and Kate needed this and life was crazy, I could have a quick on the go lunch for myself in less than 2 minutes! I went from napping on the couch when Kate napped to having enough energy to play with Aubrey, workout, clean, and just started feeling like myself!

As the weight started to come off and I could see a glimpse of the "old me", I started getting myself back - for years I put everyone before myself... I hated how I looked so I stopped getting my hair done, I stopped buying nice clothes for myself - and once I started losing weight and feeling more confident, I started putting myself on my priority list...  It is so crazy that how I started this process thinking spending 30 minutes on myself was selfish, but it ended up being the best thing I could have done for my family, because they got ME back!

And although I know my body isn't perfect, that isn't what these pictures were about - today was a celebration, celebrating the perfectly imperfect, turning my mess into my message and beating the odds...

And how did I get here?! Simply the power of challenge groups, sense super foods, 30 minute in home workouts and a specialized meal plan...

Did I think I would be here 14 months ago? No! I never imagined how my life and body would change, and I can't envision a more satisfying journey...

As I approach my one year anniversary of my weight loss journey, I am very excited to take my photos, talk about how my life has changed and show off a bit! I figured this is the perfect time to take on the 3 Day Refresh!!! Drop a few more pounds and inches before my big photo shoot! Who wouldn't want to drop a few pounds before a big event, or to kickstart weight loss or to kick some bad habits - whatever the case may be this is a great place to start - let tackle this challenge together! But first - what exactly is it???

What is the 3-Day Refresh?

The 3-Day Refresh is 3-day program of specially formulated shakes, healthy snacks, and delicious, easy-to-prepare meals that have been scientifically designed to help you lose weight and break the cycle of bad eating while dramatically improving the way you feel.

What to expect when Refreshing?

Luck of the Irish Challenge

It makes me so ready for a change! Going outside, spring cleaning, new wardrobe, and some green grass - So with all this change going on, I wanted to switch up what I do with my challenge groups! So what is a challenge group? Well it is a super awesome "place" (aka a secret group on Facebook) that you can access anytime and get unlimited support, motivation, accountability, tips, recipes, meal plans, and on and on... Usually I post something motivational in the morning, post my food, my tips, etc... I ask my "challengers" to post daily in the group so I know how they are doing and how I can help them - easy enough, right? wwweeelllll, I need to switch things up a bit! So I am so excited to announce my next 30 day challenge group - "Luck of the Irish Challenge" tah - dah! I am looking for 10 people that are ready to make a 30 day commitment to me and to themselves to live a healthier and fitter lifestyle - I promise you, this group won't be like anything I've done in the past... I am going to be posting "bonus video challenges" where we might have a chugging water contest or a bonus little workout... Oh, and the best part - besides the results? Weekly Prizes!!! Insanity Max:30 Week 3

Here we go - week 3!!! Time is flying!!! This week was similar to previous weeks, except instead of Tabata Power we now have Tabata Strength... I love strength workouts because I feel myself getting stronger each day! 3 pushups, 5 pushups, 10 pushups... stronger and stronger... what I modified Day 1, I can do a few reps of... and I love that! To me, it is more of a victory than weight loss!

M&M Blizzard Shakeology

After another dinner where Aubrey ate barely 50 calories, she asked if we could get ice cream from Dairy Queen... specifically "ice cream with candy in it" aka a blizzard lol... The last thing I was going to do was let her have ice cream after not eating dinner - but then it hit me - I can get calories, protein, super foods and about 6 salads worth of veggies in her and have her think it is a blizzard... So I busted these out - needless to say the girls and I loved it! It made enough for Aubrey, Kate and I all to enjoy for 4$... We saved cash, gas, and time - all while providing her with a sweet treat that was actually fabulous for her!

What you need:

  • 1 scoop Vanilla Shakeology
  • 10-14 Ice cubes
  • M&Ms
  • 1-2 tbsp natural peanut butter or PB2
  • 1 cup milk
  • Optional - 1 tbsp sugar free/fat free vanilla pudding powder

What you need to do:

  1. Add everything to a blender.
  2. Blend
  3. Top with extra M&M's
  4. Enjoy!
